Chris Coughlan

Chris is a Senior Associate in the Corporate & Commercial Team specialising in commercial, intellectual property and data protection work.

Chris advises organisations on a broad range of commercial law, data protection and cyber security issues. Chris has a particular interest working with organisations in the technology and retail sector and has advised a wide variety of businesses ranging from tech start-ups to multinationals. He has particular expertise in advising clients on IT outsourcing, software licencing and E-Commerce work.

He acted for a leading global smart technology provider in the roll out of their smart metering services across the UK, including their successful bid for a £300 million smart water metering project with a leading water company.

Chris has contributed to a number of industry and national publications including the FT, the Times Brief, and the Telegraph. He regularly speaks at events and spoke on the private sector panel at the Information Commissioners Office annual data protection practitioner’s conference in Manchester.

Chris delivers training to clients on a variety of topics including data protection, cyber security, and various commercial law issues.

He was listed as a “name to watch” in the 2018 Legal 500.

  • Assisting with preparations for GDPR and providing ongoing data protection advice to a leading online meal kit provider.
  • Leading on the GDPR project for all UK franchisees of a global fast food chain.
  • Advising the BMA on a co-branding agreement with a commercial partner.
  • Advising UK Anti-Doping on the data protection issues around a new commercial venture it was entering into in relation to a e sports venture.
